Indication

PRO-VET RENAL has been developed for adult cats with chronic renal failure and to provide sufficient nutrients to maintain body functions.
By cats, chronic renal failure (CRF) is a main cause of death. CRF occurs in 30% of the cats aged over 12 years. The progression of CRF can be diminished and thus survival of the patient be extended, but the condition cannot be healed. There is now a strong evidence that appropriate dietary management will enhance survival of cats with CRF. Phosphorus restriction leads to retardation of the loss of kidney function (Beynen, 2006). Apart from phosphorus restriction, the characteristics of a dietetic food for feline kidney patients are protein restriction, low sodium content, high potassium content, a moderately basic urinary pH and a high level of eicosapentaenoic acid (Plantinga et al., 2005). Clearly, restriction of essential nutrients may not cause a deficiency and the nutrient supply should be sufficient to allow normal body functions.

An appropriate renal diet can only delay the progression of the loss of nephrons and increase survival time. Among commercially available renal diets for cats there are great differences in efficacy (Elliot et al., 2000; Plantinga et al., 2005). The anticipated efficacy of PRO-VET RENAL, which is based on its ideal composition, may be equivalent to an average survival time after diagnosis of about 30 months. It is likely, that PRO-VET RENAL will be very effective in reducing the risk of development of CRF by healthy cats. The risk on chronic renal failure CRF has diminished by extra vitamin E (Yu and Paetau-Robinson, 2006), high EPA-level (Plantinga et al., 2005) and particular low level of phosphorus (Beynen, 2006).

Efficacy

CHARACTERISTIC EFFECT
Low available phosphorus Diminishing progression of kidney disease
Low protein Reduction of uremia
Low sodium Counteracting hypertension
High potassium Compensating potassium loss
Low arachidonic acid Diminishing production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids
High eicosapentaenoic acid Enhances production of vasodilatory and anti-inflammatory eicosanoids
Moderately basic urinary pH Prevention of acidosis
Nutrients at optimal concentrations

Maintenance of body functions.
Support of condition of skin and coat.

High digestibility of proteins, fats and carbohydrates Good consistency of faeces
Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 family (EPA+DHA) Stimulation of immune function. Improvement of condition of skin in atopic disease. Diminishing risk of cancer, kidney failure and osteoarthritis
Rich in natural antioxidants: vitamin E, lutein, beta-carotene, rosemary extract Reduces risk of cancer
Rich in fibres with high viscosity (F.H.V.) Decreases risk of diabetes mellitus and hairball formation. Stimulation of gut motility and advancement of faeces consistency
Rich in fibres with low viscosity (F.L.V.) Stimulates gut motility and controls hairball formation
Added Yucca extract Diminishes odour formation by faeces
Added prebiotics:
mannan oligosaccharides
fructo oligosaccharides
Increases beneficial bacteria in the gut
